What does sales kickoff mean? The SKO, explained

Read with Claude Read with ChatGPT

SKO stands for sales kickoff, the meeting that starts the sales year. Here is what happens at one, who attends, when it runs and how it differs from a company kickoff, a QBR and a national sales meeting.

SKO stands for sales kickoff: the meeting that brings a sales team together at the start of the fiscal or sales year to review the year before, hear the plan and targets, learn what is new, practice customer conversations and recognize the people who delivered. It runs from one day to a few days, in person, virtually or as a mix. Here is what happens, who goes and how it differs from the meetings it gets confused with.

What is a sales kickoff?

A sales kickoff is the one event in the year where the whole sales organization stops selling long enough to get ready to sell. It does four jobs:

  • The plan. Leadership sets out the targets, the territories, the priorities and the compensation plan for the year.
  • The product. Reps learn what is new in the product and how to position it against the competition.
  • Practice. Reps rehearse the new talk track on real deals, in small groups, with feedback from managers.
  • Recognition. The company thanks the people and teams behind the year before, often at an awards night.

The weight given to each job changes with the year. A new product pushes practice up the agenda; a turnaround puts more weight on the plan. Our guide to sales kickoff planning for sales leaders explains how to build the agenda around those blocks.

What happens at a sales kickoff

A sales kickoff that people fly in for follows a recognizable shape:

  • An arrival evening with registration and a welcome reception.
  • An opening general session, where the CEO or CRO presents the year and the plan.
  • Product and positioning, with what is new and how to sell it.
  • The compensation plan, walked through by role.
  • Role or segment breakouts, where each team turns the plan into its own plan.
  • Practice, such as role-play on the new talk track or objection rounds on real deals.
  • A customer or partner panel, with real stories from the field.
  • An awards night, recognition at dinner after a content day.

For example timings and the room each block needs, see our sales kickoff agenda templates, or the day-by-day example on the sales kickoff sample planning page.

Who attends a sales kickoff

The core audience is the people who sell and support selling: account executives, sales development reps, sales engineers, customer success, sales managers and sales leadership. Sales operations and enablement attend as organizers as well as participants, and marketing and product often present.

Some companies add channel partners or dealers. Our guide to national sales meeting planning describes how a separate partner track keeps internal pipeline and compensation sessions apart, while partners join shared moments such as the opening session and the awards night.

The guest list is set by the sales leader, with sales operations and finance, because headcount drives the room block, the meals and the budget.

When and how long

A sales kickoff runs at the start of the sales year, which is often also the start of the fiscal year. Vantly's sales kickoff destination pages cover every quarter, because fiscal years do not all start in January. For dates in January through March, the Q1 sales kickoff destinations page notes that groups of about 100 or more often need six to nine months to plan.

Length follows travel. A team that lives near the venue can hold a one-day sales kick off and go home that night. A team that flies in needs an arrival evening plus two working days for a keynote, breakouts and an awards night, and a half day more when leaders need a closed session before people leave. For the full planning picture, see sales kickoffs planned by a local planner.

Formats: in person, virtual, hybrid and regional

  • In person. Everyone in one venue, with a general session room, breakout rooms and an awards dinner. Practice, peer learning and recognition get the room they need.
  • Virtual. The plan and product updates delivered online, in short sessions with small breakout groups and time with managers.
  • Hybrid. Part of the team in the room and part online. It holds up only if remote reps get real roles, their own practice groups and visible recognition.
  • Regional. One shared virtual session for the plan, then an in-person day in each region for practice, coaching and recognition.

Our guide to in-person vs virtual sales kickoffs explains how to choose between them.

SKO vs company kickoff vs QBR vs national sales meeting

The four terms overlap, and the same event can carry two of the names. The difference sits in who attends and what the meeting is for.

Meeting Who attends When Purpose Typical length Owner Use this term when
Sales kickoff (SKO) Sales and other go-to-market teams Once a year, at the start of the sales year Launch the plan, practice how to sell it and recognize the year before One day for a local team; an arrival evening plus two days or more for a team that flies in The sales leader or sales operations The event exists to get the sales team ready to sell the new plan
Company kickoff Everyone in the company Once a year, at the start of the fiscal year Share the plan and priorities, connect teams and recognize the year Often a day, sometimes two The CEO's office, People Ops or Finance The whole company is invited and the content is company strategy
QBR (quarterly business review) Sales leaders and managers, sometimes with finance or key accounts Every quarter Review results, pipeline and forecast against the plan, and adjust A meeting, not a trip Sales leadership The meeting looks back at a quarter's numbers rather than launching a year
National or annual sales meeting The whole sales organization, sometimes with partners or dealers Once a year A conference-format event with a plenary, breakouts, a room block and recognition A few days The sales leader, with sales operations or events The event is national in scale, or the company does not use the word kickoff

Our guide to the company kickoff meeting covers how to run a company kickoff and a sales kickoff in the same week, with a shared day first and a sales-only day after.

Why companies hold a sales kickoff

A sales kickoff earns its place when it changes what reps do the week after. Companies hold one to:

  • Align everyone on one plan, so every region and role hears the same targets and priorities at the same time.
  • Practice before the year starts, on the new product, the new message and the deals in the pipeline.
  • Recognize the year before, in front of peers, which sets the standard for the year ahead.
  • Connect a team that rarely meets, so new hires, remote reps and regions know who to call.

Planning a sales kickoff

Planning starts with the headcount, the dates, the departure cities and the agenda shape. Those four choices set the room block, the venue type, the meals, the AV and the transfers. To see what the lines look like, start a budget in the sales kickoff budget calculator, whose figures are editable examples to replace with quotes.

A Vantly local planner who knows the destination handles the venue, the rooms, the food, the AV and the transfers against your agenda. Vantly works with more than 1,000 local planners across the US. The plan is tailor-made, and our intent is one vendor, one PO for the event. When you are ready, plan a sales kickoff with a local planner. You can also see sample events as examples a local planner can tailor, not fixed packages, or browse local planners. For ideas to fill the agenda, see our sales kickoff ideas, and for the budget lines, our sales kickoff cost guide. A short brief saves a round of emails; see how to brief a local planner.

Send a brief with the headcount, the dates, the departure cities and the format. Vantly matches that brief with a local planner, who produces a turnkey event proposal with prices. We send it within 48 hours, at no cost. Any price still waiting on a vendor's confirmation is marked as an estimate. From there you work with one local planner and get one all-inclusive quote, rather than a separate search for every venue and vendor.

Frequently asked questions

What does SKO stand for?

SKO stands for sales kickoff. It is the meeting at the start of the sales year where the sales team reviews the year before, hears the plan and targets, learns what is new in the product, practices customer conversations and recognizes the people and teams who delivered. It runs from one day to a few days.

What happens at a sales kickoff?

A sales kickoff covers four jobs: the plan, the product, practice and recognition. In practice that means an opening general session with the CEO or CRO, product and positioning, the compensation plan, role or segment breakouts, practice on real deals, a customer or partner panel and an awards night at dinner.

Who attends a sales kickoff?

Account executives, sales development reps, sales engineers, customer success, sales managers and sales leadership form the core. Sales operations and enablement organize it, and marketing and product often present. Some companies add channel partners or dealers, ideally in a separate track that keeps internal pipeline and compensation sessions private.

When is a sales kickoff held?

A sales kickoff runs at the start of the sales year, which often matches the start of the fiscal year. For a January through March kickoff, Vantly's Q1 destination page notes that groups of about 100 or more often need six to nine months to plan, and more time when the headcount is larger.

What is the difference between an SKO and a QBR?

An SKO happens once a year to launch the plan, practice how to sell it and recognize the year before, with the whole sales team. A QBR, or quarterly business review, happens every quarter to review results, pipeline and forecast against the plan, with sales leaders and managers. One looks forward, the other looks back.

Is a sales kickoff the same as a company kickoff?

No. A company kickoff is for everyone in the company and centers on company strategy and priorities. A sales kickoff is for go-to-market teams and centers on practice. Companies that run both can hold a shared day first and a sales-only day after, at the same venue, so people make one trip.

Can a sales kickoff be virtual?

Yes. A virtual sales kickoff works well when the main job is the message and product updates. Keep sessions short, build practice into small breakout groups and give managers time with their teams. A regional format puts the plan online and holds practice and recognition in person, one region at a time.
