Q1 Sales Kickoff (SKO) destinations from SF Bay Area

A Bay Area sales team can reach three of these five places without boarding a plane. Napa and Sonoma are about an hour north, Monterey about two hours south, and Lake Tahoe a longer winter drive into the Sierra. For guaranteed sun, Palm Springs and Scottsdale are short nonstop flights to the desert, where January afternoons sit around 68–71°F.

January
57°F / 38°F (14°C / 3°C)
February
61°F / 40°F (16°C / 4°C)
March
64°F / 42°F (18°C / 6°C)

For a Bay Area team, wine country is close enough to treat as an extended offsite rather than a trip. Q1 is the quiet season between harvest and spring, and downtown Napa runs its free Lighted Art Festival from January 16 to February 14, 2027, which gives an easy evening walk after dinner.

Venue types for about 50–300 people: Winery or estate with private event space; Boutique hotel (smaller groups); Resort with conference space.

January to March is the wet season: about 16 inches of Napa's 31 inches of yearly rain fall in those three months. Keep core sessions indoors.

Where you could stay

Carneros Resort and Spa

Napa / Sonoma, CA

Carneros Resort and Spa sits on 28 acres at the southern edge of the valley, the first part of wine country you reach coming up from the Bay. Its cottage layout gives each guest a private room, and the resort has roughly 35,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor event space for a plenary and a vineyard dinner.

February

March

Monterey gives a Bay Area team the coast without a flight, and enough conference hotel inventory to hold a full kickoff in one place. Early February is busy: the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am runs February 1–7, 2027, so aim for January or late February to March.

Venue types for about 50–300 people: Resort with conference space; Downtown conference hotel; Golf / desert resort.

Expect cool, steady days around 59–61°F and roughly 3 inches of rain a month in January and February. Plan coastal walks as optional, not core.

Palm Springs, CA Flight · approx. 1.5 hours nonstop and 69$ if booked in October

January
71°F / 48°F (22°C / 9°C)
February
74°F / 50°F (23°C / 10°C)
March
81°F / 54°F (27°C / 12°C)

When the Bay is grey, Palm Springs is the shortest route to dry, warm afternoons, about 1.5 hours on a nonstop flight. It is a compact town, so a mid-size team can walk to dinner. Book around Modernism Week (February 11–21, 2027) and the BNP Paribas Open in nearby Indian Wells (February 28 to March 14).

Venue types for about 50–300 people: Golf / desert resort; Resort with conference space; Boutique hotel (smaller groups).

Rain is rare, with about an inch a month in January and February and half that in March. Desert nights fall to the high 40s, so plan heaters for outdoor dinners.

Scottsdale has a deep bench of large resorts within a short flight of the Bay Area. Q1 is high season for good reason: January highs near 68°F and less than an inch of rain a month. Spring training brings extra demand once the Cactus League opens on February 19, 2027.

Venue types for about 50–300 people: Golf / desert resort; Resort with conference space; Ranch or estate venue.

Avoid the WM Phoenix Open week, February 8–14, 2027, when rooms near TPC Scottsdale are scarce.

Lake Tahoe, CA/NV Drive · approx. 3.5–4 h to Incline Village (longer with chain controls)

January

February
41°F / 21°F (5°C / -6°C)
March
45°F / 24°F (7°C / -4°C)

Tahoe is the snow option for a Bay Area team: a long drive, but no airport, and real winter. Diamond Peak, about two miles from the Hyatt in Incline Village, projects an early-December opening for the 2026–27 season, so an afternoon of skiing can follow a morning session.

Venue types for about 50–300 people: Mountain lodge / ski resort conference center; Resort with conference space.

Tahoe City averages about 6 inches of precipitation in January, much of it snow. Plan arrival day with a weather buffer and check chain controls before departure.

Where you could stay

Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort, Spa and Casino

Lake Tahoe, CA/NV

The Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe in Incline Village has about 17,800 square feet of meeting space, including the 7,326-square-foot Regency Ballroom. For Bay Area skiers, Diamond Peak's community ski shuttle stops at the hotel, which removes the need to organize separate transport.

Staying local.

Driving keeps the logistics simple. Napa and Sonoma take about 1–1.5 hours from San Francisco, Monterey about 2 hours on US-101 (closer to 3 if you take Highway 1), and Incline Village on Lake Tahoe about 3.5–4 hours. Allow more for the Sierra in winter, when chain controls can slow the climb.

A sample two- to three-day agenda.

In Napa, keep the plenary indoors and save the vineyard for a late-afternoon walk and dinner; January to March brings about half of the valley's yearly rain. At Tahoe, hold a short early session and put skiers on Diamond Peak's community ski shuttle, which leaves the Hyatt every half hour until 1 p.m. and returns from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. In the desert, flip the order: outdoor breakfasts, sessions through the warm middle of the day, and dinner on the terrace.

  1. Day 0. Arrivals and a welcome reception.
  2. Day 1. CEO or CRO keynote, product and compensation-plan sessions, segment breakouts, and a team dinner.
  3. Day 2. Enablement workshops and role-play, a customer or partner panel, and an awards night.
  4. Day 3, optional. A half-day leadership session, then departures.

Questions planners ask first.

Short answers for a Q1 sales kickoff.

Which Bay Area SKO options need no flights?

Napa and Sonoma, Monterey and Carmel, and Lake Tahoe are all drives. Napa is the shortest at about 1–1.5 hours; Tahoe is the longest at about 3.5–4 hours, and more when chain controls are up.

Where will a Bay Area team find reliable winter sun?

Palm Springs and Scottsdale. Palm Springs averages about 71°F by day in January and 81°F in March, with roughly an inch of rain a month. Scottsdale, measured at Phoenix Sky Harbor, is a few degrees cooler.

Which Q1 weeks are hardest to book?

In 2027, the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am fills Monterey from February 1 to 7, the WM Phoenix Open week runs February 8–14 in Scottsdale, and Modernism Week fills Palm Springs from February 11 to 21. Plan around them or book early.

Is Lake Tahoe practical for a February kickoff?

Yes, if the group accepts a mountain drive. Build buffer time into arrival day, and pick a resort near the slopes: the Hyatt Regency in Incline Village is a stop on Diamond Peak's ski shuttle.

Which places suit a 200-person kickoff with breakouts?

Scottsdale and Monterey have the deepest meeting space. The Fairmont Scottsdale Princess has two ballrooms of roughly 23,000 square feet, and the Hyatt Regency Monterey has more than 43,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor meeting space. Napa suits a smaller leadership group.
